Creative Inspiration

Cheng Xiao studied at the Repin Academy of Fine Arts in Russia, which is widely known for its strict classical realism techniques in painting. He realized early on that he did not belong to the traditional painting system. He broke free from the constraints of the academic system, overturning academic painting with a non-academic approach to academia.

He finds inspiration for his creations from magazines, newspapers, photos, and films, editing and then processing the images with pixel art techniques. One could say he physically shatters, refines, and re-creates the images to ultimately complete the artwork. His exceptional and solid painting skills in form are evident.

At this stage, Cheng Xiao's work sits between the figurative and abstract. This is the most suitable way for him to express himself currently. He has fully explored both realms. He aims to express the texture of a cinematic scene, and the figurative elements are inescapable. This also allows for a smoother expression. The medium of oil painting gives the complex works ample breathing space.

When reviewing Cheng Xiao's recent works, they can generally be divided into two main themes: one is the humanities line, and the other is the social sciences line.

The humanities line is clearly seen in exhibition works such as "Winter Flowers," "The Vanishing West Garden," "Warm-toned Memories," "Memories in Front of the Red Brick Building," and "The Last Baroque." These works focus on emotional relationships such as family, friendship, and love. "The Last Baroque" documents the once-prosperous family, now dwindling with the population reform and the reduction of families, much like the disappearance of Baroque. "The Vanishing West Garden" takes inspiration from the poet Li Bai’s "Changgan Xing," in which the child rides a bamboo horse and circles around the bed, playing with green plums. The bond of childhood sweethearts, much like our youthful years, becomes a precious memory over time. "Warm-toned Memories" captures an ordinary day: the sunset slanting into the dining room, a carefree youth waiting for his mother’s call before dinner, while Dido’s music plays on the radio, warm and beautiful. He uses the style of an art film to record these heartwarming moments, freezing them into eternity.

The social sciences line is seen in works like "The Watcher," "Collapse," and "Debate," where Cheng Xiao shifts from familial to societal content. "The Watcher" is a representative piece of Cheng Xiao's work. It portrays a city that is either disappearing or being constructed, representing the transformation of the era and the unstoppable societal tide. The young protector defends not only the land, city, and culture behind him but also the undying dreams in his heart. He guards a courageous heart. "Collapse" is a work full of atmosphere. It depicts people in a moment of decision or waiting for a result, a decision made by a societal power class. In a sense, this group of people are the creators of the social power structure.
