Flora Lu

Born in Singapore in 2000, Flora Lu is an artist living and working between London and Shanghai.

She graduated from the Illustration and Visual Media program at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. Her current practice focuses on exploring media and narrative between fine art and contemporary art from her own perspective.

Creative Inspiration

Flora Lu’s paintings challenge the conventional perception of watercolor as a light, spontaneous, and fluid medium. By combining finely rendered linework with carefully layered transparent washes, she creates a distinctive visual language that balances structure with fluidity. The lines do more than define form—they serve as the architectural framework of each composition—while the watercolor, built up through repeated layers, acquires a depth and richness that recalls the presence of classical painting.

Rather than mechanically reproducing reality, Flora Lu is concerned with the experience of looking itself. Every line and every layer of color records the passage of time, revealing a patient and deliberate creative process. Through meticulous observation and subtle construction, familiar subjects are transformed into quietly unfamiliar images, inviting viewers to slow down and discover meaning through close attention to detail.

Her distinctive use of line sets her work apart from traditional Western watercolor practice, where color often replaces contour. In Flora Lu’s paintings, line becomes the connective element that unites form, light, and space while carrying an understated emotional resonance. Viewed up close, the density of fine marks reflects remarkable precision and dedication; from a distance, they merge into calm and cohesive compositions.

In an age dominated by instant digital imagery, Flora Lu embraces painting as a slow and contemplative medium. Her practice extends the classical tradition of studying light, space, and material while engaging contemporary concerns with perception and lived experience. Through this dialogue between tradition and the present, she continues to expand the expressive possibilities of watercolor and line in contemporary painting.
