The oeuvre of paintings Light and Shadows is inspired by landscape scenes from Jeju island in Korea. The observed tropical landscape is filled with intense colors and the vastness of pine forest on black stone ground. I came up with the idea to explore the observed landscape in the absence of color. By reducing the intense green, the color of the landscape is replaced with gray. The grayness of the landscape becomes a monochrome observation but not a boring one. Monochrome becomes an intense contrast and it plays a role in composition with the painted houses in color as well as the contrast of the white empty space that suggests the outline of the landscape. Reduction of observed narratives is preset too. With no land, and no background the absence of expected colors sharpens the shapes. Grayness and emptiness becomes duality. It becomes a play between day and night, light and shadow, flickering and static, fullness and emptiness. It becomes for me mystical and dreamy.
