Creative Inspiration
Spiritual Exploration and the Sacred in Microscopic Painting
Since 2021, Wu Jian has embarked on a microscopic exploration of painting, bringing artistic attention back to the authenticity of brushwork and inner contemplation. His practice is rooted in both technical tradition and personal experience. By extending the “floating white” process of oil tempera, he establishes a dense and refined classical foundation in his paintings. At the same time, drawing on his early academic training in Impressionist color decomposition, he introduces a heightened sensitivity to light and color, forming a painterly language that combines technical depth with a strong personal imprint.
Within contemporary painting discourse, Wu Jian situates his work between Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. Rather than allowing emotion to erupt freely as in Abstract Expressionism, or reducing form to an extreme as in Minimalism, he seeks a balance between the two. His work retains the expressive and spiritual concerns of Abstract Expressionism while presenting them through a restrained, minimalist approach.
The repetition of brushstrokes creates a quiet sense of order, while the fluid movement of curved lines introduces warmth and vitality into the composition. The paintings thus possess both a rational structure and a sensuous presence. This balance allows Wu Jian to move beyond the constraints of stylistic categorization and to expand the expressive possibilities of abstract painting.
Inspired by a passage from the Gospel of Matthew—“I am gentle and humble in heart… and you will find rest for your souls”—faith plays an important role in Wu Jian’s artistic practice. Through soft and meditative brushwork, he translates the idea of “grace” into a perceptible visual language. The repeated brushstrokes resemble ripples in a spiritual field, visualizing the texture of grace. Within the quiet rhythm of the paintings, viewers may encounter a sense of calm and inner stillness.
